Threshing Rice

For three months rice stalks hung to dry in the West Tisbury school second grade classrooms. Last week the students finally threshed and saved seed from their rice harvest. In class they illustrated the rice life cycle: from planting seedlings, to watching the tillers grow tall, to drying the stalks, and finally collecting seed -- which can be eaten or planted again. This year the students will plant all of the seed from their rice harvest but hope next year that exponential growth will provide some rice to eat!
